Col, Philip Ludwell's (LU-1) letter continues :

"...I am not for under hand Dealings, what ever you think; especially for Intercepting Letters, which is Complained of, and indeed is a Crime so Barbarous, that I could almost soon forgive Murther ; Nor will it be well taken any where.  I hope you will take care that Letters go free, on both sides; or else Misunderstandings will arise, and increase; and all Commerce soon have an end.  I shall say no more, but desire you to consider that by these Discords, you do (not only) ruine the Lords Interest, but expose your selves, and all the People of those Islands, as an easy prey, to any that will take you.

Remember this letter was sent to Cadwallader Jones (JO-1) dated as above.  It is abstracted by Thomas Bulkley (BUL-1) and printed London, 1696.  How Bulkley (BUL-1) obtained a copy of this correspondence is unknown, but it would seem the "Intercepting Letters" was involved.

BUL : A Second "Pacquet of Intelligence"

From the posts beginning July 3, 2016 [ CJ (#57)] through the 2 January, 2018 the first packet of "intelligence" collected and organized by Thomas Bulkley (BUL-l) is given.  The following shows the title page to the second grouping of information from Bulkley's side of the fence.

This packet ends the 20th of May 1693.  It was to be another 3 years before this was published in London 1696 as a completed record of the case being presented.  This second part is identified as containing three letters :

1) an abstract of a letter from Philip Ludwell (LU-1) the "Governour of Carolina" to our Cadwallader (JO-1) responding to two letters sent by Cadwallader (JO-1).

2) a letter from Philip Ludwell (LU-1) to Thomas Bulkley (BUL-1) responding to letters sent by Gilbert Asbley (AS-1), Bowen Clasen (CLA-1), and Thomas Bulkley (BUL-1).

3) a letter from Thomas Bulkley (BUL-1) to Philip Ludwell (LU-1).

This second packet is lengthy, but is an important set of documents which gives the thoughts of Thomas Bulkley (BUL-1) in his case against Cadwallader Jones (JO-1).  The content of this packet will be given in future posts under the pathway of Bulkley (BUL-1).

CJ (#37) Sold and Delivered

You certainly can see how confusing it can get climbing those family tree branches.  The life of our Cadwallader (JO-1) is such a branch.  This document is found in (Old) Rappahannock County Deed Book 1686 - 1688, p. 68.  It is recorded as "March the 8th 1687" and it seems to be signed on this date.  It is recorded in the court records on "3 die August 1687 et record 12th die".  There is an addendum dated "8ber 20th 1686" which was recorded "3 die August 1687 et record 12th die" and a "two Bills of Sale" dated "July the 5th 1687" which in the record states "Recordr. Cur Com Rappa: 12th die August 1687".  Well, anyway, let me give the documents as written.   Remember that our Cadwallader (JO-1) is reported to have left for Maryland around the 17th of January 1687. [see last post]

"March the 8th 1687"

"An Account of Goods and Chattles sold and delivered unto Mr. Robt. Taliaferro (TA-1) as Gardian of Charles (TA-5) and Catharine Taliaferro (TA-6) for the Orphans Estate amount to ninety eight pounds seven Shillings and four pence (vizt) To one Negro called Frank, To one Indian, To one Negro girle 12 months old, To 2 old Negroes Frank and James; To 3 indifferent feather beds and furniture; To 10 cows, To 2 two yeare old at 12 S., To 5 yearlings, To 20 sheep, To 50 lb. Pewter at 8d., To 1 pair Cart wheels, To 1 iron pott and two pare pott hooks, To Brass kettle, To one Couch, To 12 old chairs, To one old Mare, To one old horse, Total 98...07...04."  [This would be in pounds, shillings, and pence.]

The documents continues:

"Know All Men by these presents that I Lt. Coll: Cadwalader Jones (JO-1) have bargained sold and delivered unto Mr. Robt: Taliaferro (TA-1) his heires and assignes the abovesd goods and chattles with their Encrease wch: said goods and chattles I do warrnt from the claimes of any persons unto the sd Mr. Robt. Taliaferro or his order  In witness whereof I have sett my hand this 8th of March 1686/7

CJ (#33) The Straw (part 1)

Life was certainly not easy for old Cadwallader Jones (JO-1) during the years 1985 - 1986.  It was on the 3rd of March 1685/6 (1686) that the following was recorded in the court order book of (Old) Rappahannock County.

"Mr. John Taverner (TAV-1) appeared Attorney for Mr. Tho. Glascock, (GL-1), Attorney Capt. Wm. Wraxall (WR-1).

     - Whereas upon issue joyned between William Wraxall (WR-1) of the Citty of Bristoll in the Kingdom of England, Mariner, and William Colston (COLS-1) of Rappa: County in his Maties Colony of Virginia, the Plt. by his Attorney, Thomas Glascock (GL-1), shewed that whereas Cadwallader Jones (JO-1) of the sd County & Colony Gent. did draw Bills of Exchange for Sixteen pounds Sterling money of England upon John Jeffries Esqr. (JE-1) Merchant in London, payable unto the sd William Colston (COLS-1) which sd Bills of Exchange for a consideracon received the Defent. assigned to the sd Wm. Wraxall (WR-1), but..."

This record becomes a bit confusing with similar names and the way it is written.  I will try to separate the document into sections calling this "part 1" which establishes the issue.  Our Cadwallader Jones (JO-1) gave a "Bills of Exchange" for sixteen pounds Sterling (English Money) payable to William Colston (COLS-1) [was clerk of court 1683 ].  This was based upon John Jeffries Esqr. (JE-1), merchant in London [He has long standing relationship to many in the colony of VA and the Jeffery family comes through the same line as our Cadwallader!]  William Colston (COLS-1) then makes "a consideration" with William Wraxall (WR-1) Mariner from the City of Bristol... "but"... more to come.

CJ (#14) True and Lawfull Attorney

Immediately following the indenture of Cadwallader Jones (JO-1) and John Jefferies (JE-1) in the (Old) Rappahannock Co. Deed Book 1682-1686, is the following record.  It reads:

"TO ALL XPIAN People to whom these prsents shall come Cadwallader Jones (JO-1) of the Collony of Virginia send Greeting in or:Lord God Everlasting.  Whereas he the said Cadwallader Jones (JO-1) aforesaid, Son and Heire of Richard Jones (JO-5) of London, Merchant, and John Jefferies (JE-1) of London aforesaid by their certain Deed made over unto Sr:Robert Jefferyes (JE-3), Knight Alderman of the City of London, a certain Lordship or Mannor of LEY with all the rights within the Parish of Beerferis in County of Devon and Kingdom of England and all the capetail of said Mannor called by the name of LEY with all the lands commonly called by ye severall names of Wallers Great, Hawcombe, Little Hawcombe, Beeralbeiston and Baselace being within the prcincts of LEY in the said Parish of BEER FERIS and all thos two Bargages with apptnences in HAWCOMBE in ye County of DEVON and all that Copice of Copice Wood containing Fifteen acres be it more or less being in the BEERFERIS and also the houses buildings (&c) belonging as by the aforesd Deed of bargain and Sale may appear  Now Know yee that he the said Cadwalader Jones (JO-1) by occasion aforesaid hath made and constitued in his place and stead his true and well beloved ffriend John Jefferyes (JE-1) of London aforesaid Esqr. his true and lawfull Attorney to act and doe everything on the part of Cadwalader Jones (JO-1) ought to be done concering the aforesaid mentionaed Instrument and the said Cadwalader Jones (JO-1) hath hereby further authorised the aforesaid John Jefferyes (JE-1) Esquire in his name and place to make acknowledgemt. as Attorney of said JONES (JO-1) in any Court or otherwise confirming wtsoever his said Attorney or his Substitute shall lawfully act and doe to be as authentique as he the said Cadwalader Jones (JO-1) could do if psonable prsent In Witness whereof the said Cadwalader Jones (JO-1) hath sett his hand and affixed his Seale this seaventh day of Febry 1682.  Signed Sealed and delivered in prsence of

This document would suggest that John Jeffereys (JE-1) was a "well beloved friend".  This phrase was often used to describe a relationship with family members as well, but would seem to imply that there was no direct family ties, i.e., half-brother, 1st cousin, etc.?  It may be that John Jefferys (JO-1) was a business partner to Richard Jones (JO-5) in London.   A John Jeffereys was connected as a merchant to a number of folks in the colonies, which is yet to be shown.

CJ (#14) Manor of Ley (III)

The indenture continues:

"And Further that he the said Sr. Robert Jeffereys (JO-3) his heirs may at all times forever hereafter have and enjoy the said Mannor Lordship and Hereditaments without the lawfull lett or deniall of him the said Cadwallader Jones (JO-1) his heirs and that the said Cadwallader Jones (JO-1) or John Jeffereyes (JE-1) or either of them will upon request make further acts for the better assuring and makeing of all the premisses according to the true meaning of these presents as said Sr. Robert Jeffereyes (JE-1) his heirs or Councell Learned in the Law shall lawfully advise as that the parties requested to do the same be not compelled to travell above the space of five miles from their respective usuall place of abode In Witness whereof the parties have set their hands and sealses in the presence of us

Please note that the numbering system is added and not in the original documents.  This ends the indenture as recorded in (Old) Rappahannock County Deed Book 1682-1686, p. 3-4.  The names of the witnesses can be helpful at times when the brick walls become thick.  It is recorded February 7, 1682.

CJ(1): For Satisfaction

The first primary document that I could uncover on Cadwallader Jones (JO-1) is found in the records of Old Rappahannock County, Virginia. This primary document is copied from (Old) Rappahannock County Deed Book 1672-1676. Part II, p.42, transcribed by Ruth and Sam Sparacio, The Ancient Press, 1990. The numbering system begins here, and the (brackets) are not in the original documents. It reads:

"Whereas HENRY CORBIN Esqr. (CO-1) My Husband did by Deed bearing date September 21st 1672 or thereabouts sell and convey to Mr. ROBERT TALIAFERRO (TA-1) and to his heirs forever a certain parcell of land as is recited in Rappa County Court but noe acknowledgement or Release of my Right of Dower Now Know yee that for satisfaction received of Mr. CADWALADER JONES (JO-1) I doe by these presents freely voluntarily and willingly constitute and appoint Mr. WILLIAM TRAVERS (TR-1) my lawful attorney to acknowledge in Court my free consent to the sale of the said Land and that I doe acquit and release all my right of Dower in the said land forever as witness my hand and seale this 6th day of January 1672."

Recognitr in Cu Comr Rappa 4 die 9bris 1674

[Please note that not all the words are spelled the same as we do today. I have tried to copy the document as close to the original as recorded by those who initially wrote the document. Also note that in the context of this document, the date 6th day of January 1672 would be in the "old calendar" system and thus makes the date actually 6th of January 1673. This begins our story of Cadwallader Jones (JO-1). He is found in Old Rappahannock County records involved in giving "satisfaction" to the wife of Henry Corbin (CO-1). In legal terms, giving "satisfaction" meant compensating the person for whom the action is recorded. This record does not give the actual "satisfaction" conveyed, but it could have been tobacco (the most common form of barter or exchange), money, property (in many cases slaves), or other items. This action involved the sale of land from Henry Corbin (CO-1) to Robert Taliaferro (TA-1) during the year 1672. The land would have been part of the estate of the wife Alice Corbin (CO-2) since she is documenting that she would make no claim to this land by right of her Dower. [A dower is the part or interest of a deceased man's real estate allotted by law to his widow for her lifetime.] This claim would be against Robert Taliaferro (TA-1), if the wife were to proceed against the new owner of the land for her dower, as given under Virginia law. However, it is Cadwallader Jones (JO-1) who provides the appropriate interchange with Alice Corbin (CO-2).

The story begins....

My Heart's Blood

To tell the life story of any individual is a difficult task. To tell the life story of an individual who has lived more than 360 years ago is quite a challenge. I come to this task after many, many years of genealogical research. (More than 51 years, to be exact.) It would seem that I have collected almost every historical document pertaining to my Cadwallader Jones. I am sure this is not the case, and that there are other documents which I have not uncovered. However, I have decided to stop digging around and start writing about what I have found. The plan of my blog will be to let the historical documents speak for themselves. These documents will be presented in chronological order, and as written in the language of the day. There are certain cases where some translation into modern English was necessary, but these will be identified. I will then try to place these documents into the historical context which surrounds them. Weaving these items into a coherent thread will be one of my tasks, but I like to tell stories. I will try to draw, from these records, the life story of one Cadwallader Jones.

At this point, it will be necessary to outline some of the methods and approaches that I have taken. I will use the following definitions for the terms and abbreviations that will be used throughout the posts.

First, call a "Primary Document" any historical document written during the life time of the person under research. I further define a "Primary Document" into three classes:

Class A- is an civil, legal, or governmental document recorded during the life span of the individual being researched. Examples are deeds, wills, court orders and records, birth certificates, death certificates, census data, military records, etc.

Class B- is any family, personal, religious, social, historical document written during the life span of the individual. This would include such items as Bible Records, personal letters, diary, business, or other items which involve communications or reference to the person being research.

Class C- is any document written during the life of the individual from any other source such as letters, newspaper, diary, which are written by others regarding the individual under research.

Secondly, call a "Secondary Document" any item which is written about the individual after the life span of the person under research, but does not represent any of the primary documentation classes outlined above. This would represent the published materials such as books, articles, biographies, etc., written about or pertaining to the person under research. I would further define these "Secondary Documents" as follows:

Class A- is any report, article, or book, which carefully records and references sources that are used in writing these documents. This would include genealogical work or historical texts which have clear references documented, and this documentation can be verified by an independent researcher.

Class B- is any item or document which presents information pertaining to the person of research, but does not present clear documentation. This would include family stories (legends), oral histories and accounts, newspaper articles, etc.

Class C- is any genealogical information recorded pertaining to the individual under research without references or documentation. This would included many of the Internet sites which present genealogical information without the source of documentation!

Whew, enough already. I will try and use the above classifications for each item(s) presented when telling the story of Cadwallader Jones. This will provide a way for the reader to judge the historical "strength" of each document, and to have a means to check the source for themselves.
